Manchester City officials remain ‘optimistic’ over a potential deal for Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer, according to the latest information.
The search for a new goalkeeper at the Etihad Stadium has become one of the most pressing issues of the transfer window. With Ederson linked heavily to Galatasaray, City are determined not to be left without a ready-made replacement for their long-serving number one.
A move for Donnarumma – long considered as one of Europe’s elite shot-stoppers – would certainly represent both a succession plan between the posts and an immediate solution at the highest level.
Donnarumma’s future has been uncertain for some time, with PSG reshaping their squad and entertaining interest in high-profile players. The Italian goalkeeper, who joined the French champions on a free transfer from AC Milan in 2021, has endured periods of inconsistency in France, but his pedigree and age profile make him a perfect candidate for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Importantly, Donnarumma himself has shown a willingness to seek a new challenge outside of Ligue 1, with the Premier League viewed as an attractive next step by himself and those working around him.
For Manchester City, the timing of any deal hinges directly on Ederson’s exit, with the Brazilian continuing to evaluate interest from Galatasaray. The Turkish giants are eager to complete negotiations but have yet to reach an agreement, creating a chain of uncertainty.
According to the information of journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City remain optimistic over a deal for Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, and remain in talks with both the French giants and the player’s representatives.
From the side of the Italian goalkeeper, it is insisted that Donnarumma is very keen on a move to Manchester City and personal terms will not be a problem in negotiations, but all remains dependant on Ederson and his own potential move to Galatasaray – where talks are ongoing.
Romano also provides clarity around potential rival interest in Donnarumma, where he informs this week, “As of today, it’s Tuesday, Manchester United have not moved for Gianluigi Donnarumma.
“At the moment United are just aware of the situation. Man United took information on what happened between PSG and Donnarumma and United took information on the salary of the player, more than €10 million plus add-ons net per season – Donnarumma joined on a free from Milan to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.
“But also important to say Manchester United didn’t call to start a negotiation, didn’t approach Paris Saint-Germain, so at the moment Man United haven’t moved for Donnarumma.”
Looking ahead, the situation could unfold rapidly should Galatasaray return with an improved offer for Ederson. City have been clear that only once a departure becomes inevitable will they greenlight the pursuit of a replacement, but Donnarumma remains at the top of their list.
Should the Italian arrive in Manchester, he would not only fill the void left by Ederson but also offer Pep Guardiola a goalkeeper capable of anchoring the position for the next decade, and perhaps cause some uncertainty over James Trafford’s position – despite only joining the club earlier this summer.
However, with Manchester United continuing to monitor the situation in the background, City may be keen to close talks swiftly to prevent the emergence of an unwanted rival late in the window.
