Gianluigi Donnarumma retains a chance of joining Manchester City this summer despite a matter of days remaining in the ongoing transfer window.
The Premier League giants have been keeping a close eye on the goalkeeper market in recent weeks, with Ederson’s position at the Etihad Stadium remaining uncertain following repeated interest from Saudi Arabia and, most recently, Galatasaray.
The long-standing number one’s contract runs until the summer of 2026, but Manchester City are open to evaluating offers given that he is now approaching nine seasons at the club and continues to hold significant market value.
In response, Etihad Stadium officials have drawn up a shortlist of potential replacements should the Brazilian leave, with Gianluigi Donnarumma emerging as the leading candidate given his unique situation of being shut out at PSG despite his staggering capabilities.
The 26-year-old Italian international has been Paris Saint-Germain’s first-choice since arriving from AC Milan, and remains highly regarded across Europe. His proven experience at the highest level, coupled with his age profile, makes him an attractive option for City.
City’s interest also ties into their wider goalkeeping strategy, which has already seen the arrivals of James Trafford and the expected exit of Stefan Ortega. Guardiola and his staff are determined to ensure stability between the posts regardless of whether Ederson stays or departs, with the aim of avoiding any disruption across the campaign.
According to the latest information of Fabrizio Romano, negotiations are continuing in the background for Gianluigi Donnarumma and a transfer to Manchester City, with positive talks also ongoing with Paris Saint-Germain over a €30 million to €35 million deal.
While there is also a total agreement with Donnarumma himself, it is further insisted that the entire operating is still waiting for Ederson and an exit from the Etihad Stadium for the Brazilian.
Looking ahead, Manchester City face a delicate balancing act. Should Ederson accept an offer currently on the table, the pathway would immediately clear for Donnarumma to arrive and assume the number one role under Pep Guardiola.
However, if Ederson chooses to stay, Manchester City may opt to hold off and revisit their interest in Donnarumma at a later stage, possibly in the January window, should the player remain available and in his current situation in the French capital.
Another factor to watch is Stefan Ortega, who has ambitions to become a first-choice goalkeeper in his own right. Any incoming signing of Donnarumma will force Ortega further down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium.
Ultimately, the next few days are likely to determine not only Ederson’s future but also whether Manchester City make one of the most high-profile moves of the summer. For now, Donnarumma remains very much on the radar, but everything hinges on Ederson’s situation.
