The reigning Premier League champions are falling further and further behind the leaders in the pursuit of the English top-flight title, and following another calamitous 1-2 defeat at the weekend at the hands of Manchester United, many have written off their chances.

That poor form in domestic competition is continuing over into European football too, and with just two matches remaining in the league phase of the tournament, Manchester City are at serious risk of dropping out of the Champions League all together.

Having recorded two defeats and two draws from their opening six matches in the first phase of the tournament, Manchester City are languishing in 22nd position in the league format, and that form has also cost the club dearly in a financial aspect.

According to the information of the Mail’s Jack Gaughan, Manchester City’s form in the UEFA Champions League so far this season has already cost the club almost £6 million in lost prize money.

It is revealed that UEFA award clubs £1.77 million for every league phase victory and just under £600,000 for a draw in the phase of the competition, and while City could have secured themselves of £10 million already with two games to play, their current prize money is said to be close to £4.5 million

In comparison to Liverpool, who have won all six group matches so far, Arne Slot’s club are set to secure £22.9 million should they earn defeat Lille and PSV, with the prize for progression to the play-offs around £840,000, with an eventual spot in the last-16 worth £9 million.

In the final two matches of the league phase in the Champions League this season, Manchester City face a further two stern tests and know that their standards across competitions must drastically improve if they are to secure themselves a play-off place for the last-16.

A trip to the French capital for a clash against Paris Saint-Germain awaits City in the new year, before the league phase of the competition will conclude with Club Brugge visiting the Etihad Stadium.
