Manchester United long-term target Jeremie Frimpong is reportedly of interest to his former side Manchester City.

The Red Devils have suffered defensively all season as they have now conceded 58 goals in the Premier League and unless they beat Brighton by four goals at the weekend, they will finish the season with a negative goal difference.

Diogo Dalot has been one of the side’s strongest performers and he is about the only defender who has been able to play consistently throughout the season.

However, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s future up in the air, Erik ten Hag’s side have been linked to bringing in a new right back.

It has been reported that Denzel Dumfries was wanted, but that latest reports seem to suggest that interest is cooling.

Bayer Leverkusen wingback, Frimpong, is also a long-term target of the club and especially for Erik ten Hag.

However, it has been suggested that United would only move for the player if they can find a new suitor for Wan-Bissaka.

Whilst it has been said that Leverkusen wish to tie the player down to a new deal, his future looks like it will be away from the BayArena.

The player has been in fine form in this campaign as he has an outlandish 14 goals and 12 assists from the fullback position.

However, HITC report that Manchester City are now back in the race and that Frimpong would be open to a deal with his former side.

“Manchester City have spoken to Jeremie Frimpong about a potential return to the Premier League giants for the Bayer Leverkusen speedster with Man United, Arsenal and Aston Villa also in the race,” the outlet claims.

The Dutch fullback was a graduate of City’s academy before joining Celtic in 2019 and then Leverkusen in 2021.

Worryingly from a United perspective, Frimpong has already spoken out on the interest he would have for playing for his old side in the future.

Speaking to MARCA last summer he said, “(Pep) Guardiola, really, was not my coach. I only met him a handful of times when I went up to train with the first-team.”

“It would be great (to return) but I don’t know. They have just won the Champions League (vs Inter Milan last year) and are the best team in the world. In the future, we will see.”

Losing the player would be a significant blow as he has been a long-term target of the Red Devils and especially Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag clearly wants to have more attack-minded fullbacks and there are few if any, in world football who can do this to the level of Frimpong.

Moreover, with a low release clause of £34 million and only being 23 years old, whoever signs the player will get incredible value for money.
