Officials at Manchester City have discussed the possibility of fresh investment in a new area of Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad, according to a report.
The Etihad Stadium welcomed into its organisation a key upcoming member of the club’s future earlier this month as Hugo Viana began work full-time from the City Football Academy ahead of taking on a crucial role from this summer.
The 42-year-old is due to become Manchester City’s next director of football replacing Txiki Begiristain, who confirmed earlier in the season that this would be his final year working at the club after 12 campaigns.
After a hugely underwhelming season from all within Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad, the upcoming summer transfer window now takes on further importance, and piles pressure upon Viana to get recruitment right and restore City’s position at the top of the game.
And while much of the talk has centred around the likes of central midfield and full-back positions, a new report has indicated that despite strength in another position, discussions have been held over a refresh elsewhere.
That is according to MailSport’s Jack Gaughan, who states that the goalkeeping department at the Etihad Stadium is now an area of Pep Guardiola’s squad that has been discussed for strengthening during Hugo Viana’s first summer as the club’s new director of football.
Ederson was a primary target for clubs in Saudi Arabia during the last summer transfer window, but no club ultimately met the financial demands of Manchester City, who valued their number one shot-stopper at around £50 million.
Amid worrying reoccurrences of a groin problem, it remains to be seen whether Middle-Eastern suitors will return for the 31-year-old this summer, and whether Manchester City would again be open to a sale.
As for Stefan Ortega Moreno, the Germany international has made no secret of his desire to become a number one choice at one of Europe’s leading sides, and a prolonged stay of Ederson at the Etihad Stadium may lead to the former Arminia Bielefeld man assessing his options.
