In a recent print edition, AS claimed that Manchester City are in the running to recruit Barcelona keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen this summer. It has been stated that the Mancunian giants would have to rival Galatasaray in the race to land the German goalie this off-season.

Ter Stegen’s Growing Injury Concerns At The Nou Camp Last Season

Ter Stegen endured an injury-plagued campaign at the Catalan club recently but managed to put in a few solid displays for them in La Liga. The 33-year-old conceded 11 goals and earned one clean sheet in nine matches for Barcelona last season across various competitions.

The German talent needs to secure regular first-team football if he wants to re-establish himself as a top keeper in European football. He was tidy when distributing possession from the back after completing 92.8% of his attempted passes in La Liga (stats via fbref.com).

His current contract at the Nou Camp will run out in the summer of 2028. Therefore, Man City would have to make a convincing offer if they are serious about recruiting ter Stegen in this transfer period.

Should Manchester City Boss Pep Guardiola Go For Ter Stegen?

Ter Stegen can be a safe pair of hands in between the sticks when he is playing regularly on the field. He can use his quick reflexes to make a few solid saves at the back.

The German goalie is a good handler of the ball as well. He can even play his way out from the back. However, there are some concerns over whether ter Stegen would be able to cope with the physicality and high intensity of the Premier League if Man City manage to bring him on board this summer.

The Germany international would no doubt enhance the quality of Pep Guardiola’s match-day squad. He is good enough to serve as a decent replacement for Ederson, whose contract at the Etihad Stadium will expire at the end of next season.

At 33, ter Stegen might still have a couple of good seasons left in him to play at his best. Hence, he could prove to be a good, short-term signing for Man City to consider in this transfer window. All in all, Guardiola should undoubtedly go for a player of ter Stegen’s skill set soon.
