Manchester City have reached an agreement in principle with Portuguese defender Ruben Dias for a new contract, according to The Athletic.
Dias’ current deal at the Etihad Stadium expires in June 2027, but City are on the verge of tying one of their trusted lieutenants down to a new contract.
Since joining the club from Primeira Liga outfit Benfica in 2020 for an initial fee of around £62 million, Dias has been a defensive cornerstone.
His immediate impact was evident as he was named Footballer of the Year in his debut season en route to winning the first of four straight league titles.
Beyond domestic success, Dias was instrumental in City’s first-ever Champions League title in the 2022/23 season, where they won a historic treble.
Dias’ qualities extend beyond just his defensive prowess, as he is widely recognised for his leadership qualities on and off the field, which earned him a place in City’s captaincy group in 2021.
Despite a relatively underwhelming campaign in general for Man City last time out, Dias remains a cornerstone for the Cityzens, and his impending contract extension reflects that status.
Diaz and his teammates will be aiming to bounce back from their first season without a major trophy in eight years.
Having featured at the Club World Cup, Man City have only one pre-season fixture against Palermo to navigate on Saturday.
Pep Guardiola’s side will then kick off their quest for Premier League glory seven days later with a clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.
