It was a lacklustre display from Pep Guardiola’s side as a first half Tottenham Hotspur double was enough to secure them three points and back-to back wins.
A perfect counter attack saw Brennan Johnson smash home Spurs’ first and, just before half-time, they doubled their lead with a big error from James Trafford handing João Palhinha his first goal in a Spurs shirt.
New summer signing Rayan Aït-Nouri was subbed off early into the first half with what looked like a little knock. City fans will be hoping it’s not too serious.
Spurs then hit City with the perfect counter attack, as Richarlison found space to run in behind and played a perfect cross to Johnson, who fired it into the back of the net past Trafford.
Then there was a moment of madness from City, as Trafford gave the ball straight to Pape Matar Sarr, and after a scramble inside the box, summer signing Palhinha smashed it into the back of the net to double their lead before half-time.
Despite being two goals down, Guardiola’s side struggled to create any clear cut opportunities to get back into the game, with the only memorable chance being a cutback to Phil Foden which was excellently blocked by Micky van de Ven.
As the final whistle was blown, it was loud cheers from the away end as Spurs went top of the Premier League with a terrific team performance.
