While on the receiving end of a 13th Premier League defeat last night, there is a case to be made for Manchester United showing promising signs in their most recent outings.

The Red Devils were dealt their most recent blow in a narrow 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, squandering their chances to claim back-to-back league wins for the first time in 2024/2025.

Building momentum wouldn’t have gone amiss leading into such a pivotal run of fixtures, which sees Ruben Amorim’s men lock horns with Manchester City on Sunday, Olympique Lyonnais in a two-legged Europa League quarter-final and a trip to face Newcastle United.

Yet, the majority of fans are choosing to take a positive outlook on Tuesday’s affair in the East Midlands, during which United had more shots and more possession against the high-flying Trees.

Noussair Mazraoui was quick on the scene to stifle Forest’s forwards

Barring a truly torrid attempt to deal with Anthony Elanga’s blistering counter-attack – and subsequent goal – inside five minutes, Amorim’s defensive contingent battled relentlessly to ensure Forest were granted no other chances to extend their advantage.

One Red, in particular, put in a stellar shift in the 90 minutes he played: Noussair Mazraoui. He won seven ground duels, made one key pass, six tackles, three clearances and an interception (Sofascore).

However, the most notable statistic of all is that the full-back recorded two last-man tackles; no player has made more in a single Premier League game in any of the last 12 seasons, as per WhoScored – a truly remarkable feat.

United fans will be expecting a relatively similar setup at the back when the club host arch-rivals City this Sunday, although Amorim will likely have to clarify whether Matthijs de Ligt is fit to play; he was spotted limping out of the stadium at full-time but stopped to assure a reporter he was ‘okay’.
