Manchester United could be heading for a major battle to keep hold of their top talents after a disastrous 2024-25 campaign.
According to the Guardian, “Kobbie Mainoo is minded to reject the offer of a new contract at Manchester United and seek a move abroad.”
The report further revealed that United “would be open to selling the England international, who is valued at about £70m, to help their finances.”
The Red Devils successfully secured contract extensions for Amad Diallo and Harry Maguire earlier this season, but uncertainty still looms over several key players.
Mainoo is high on United’s priority list, with the club determined to tie him down for the long term.
Reports suggest the club have opened ‘fresh talks‘ with the teenager over a new deal, but negotiations have hit a roadblock.
Mainoo is reportedly demanding a significant pay rise to £180,000-a-week plus bonuses before committing his future to Old Trafford.
The young sensation has been part of United for over a decade, rising through the ranks to become one of their brightest prospects.
Former manager Erik ten Hag quickly recognised Mainoo’s immense talent, handing him his senior breakthrough.
Since then, the teenager has cemented his place as a vital figure for both club and country, proving his worth on the biggest stage.
Despite his rapid rise, Mainoo is currently earning a modest £20,000 per week.
However, his reported demand for a ninefold increase seems excessive.
Before his unfortunate muscle injury last month, head coach Ruben Amorim had started using Mainoo in a more advanced midfield role, showcasing his attacking potential.
Blessed with exceptional flair and technical ability, the United academy graduate has all the tools to thrive in the final third.
United must focus on convincing him to stay at Old Trafford by selling the long-term vision under Amorim while offering a more balanced salary package of around £120,000 per week.
