Tyler Dibling has laughed off reports that Southampton value the young winger at £100m, claiming "it's just a number" that he and his Saints teammates aren't taking seriously.
Dibling's emergence has been the silver lining to a miserable season that saw Southampton suffer the earliest relegation in Premier League history earlier this month – they also remain level with Derby County's record low points tally (11) with five games remaining.
But due to his performances and long-term potential, 19-year-old Dibling has been linked with a summer transfer. Manchester United, where he could be a good fit for Ruben Amorim's 3-4-2-1 system, Manchester City, going through a major rebuild, and Tottenham Hotspur have each been mentioned as showing interest in the teenage talent.
£100m is the reported valuation from the Saints, hoping to extract every penny possible if they are forced to sell. That figure has been the subject of jokes around the training ground, though.
"There's a few nicknames going around. It is all jokes. Nobody takes it seriously. It's just a number. It's all fun," Dibling explained this week, stating goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale's particular joy.
"Rambo loves it to be fair. I'll miss a shot in training and he'll just go '90 million' or '80 million' as it goes down. It's all good fun but I'm just trying to practice every day and to get better.
"I don't try to think about it and just go in to train every day and work hard and train the best I can. At the end of the day, I love Southampton. I have been here since I was eight. It is such a great team and I am working to do big things with them."
Man Utd, primarily targeting young developing talent over established names that would command big contracts, are tipped to more likely pursue Dibling if they manage to win this season's Europa League and secure Champions League qualification (and revenue) in 2025/26.
