Despite officially putting pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers at the beginning of the week, it’s widely expected that Matheus Cunha will depart the club in the next year.

That’s because the Molineux outfit is currently only two points adrift of the dreaded drop in the Premier League, and, should they drop down to the second division come May, there’s little to no chance they’ll be able to keep hold of their prolific talisman.

Cunha, 25, has notched 27 goals and 13 assists in the two-and-a-half seasons he’s spent in the Midlands following his move from Atletico Madrid. He’s currently only one goal away from matching his personal record of 12 league goals – achieved in 2023/2024 – while having another 14 games to do so.

Reports have previously suggested that Manchester United had added themselves to the lengthy list of the forward’s admirers, so there’s no doubt Ruben Amorim and Co. were keeping a close eye on how his contract situation played out in recent months.

Surprisingly, they’ve perhaps received something of a boost from the extension, as Cunha’s suitors now know exactly how much they’ll have to fork out for him through his newly inserted release clause – worth a reported £62 million.

The Daily Mail claims there is a ‘no restrictions’ factor in the terms, meaning any interested club is free to enter the race for his signature when the next window opens.

United fans may remember when, only a matter of months ago, Cunha liked an Instagram comment hinting at him making the switch to Old Trafford. If INEOS know what’s good for them, they’ll do everything in their power to make such a prospect come to fruition.
