Ruben Amorim has defended Manchester United's decision not to delve into the transfer market in January to strengthen in attack.

In his first window at Old Trafford, he brought in just one new face with Patrick Dorgu joining from Lecce, while sanctioning loan exits for underperforming forwards Marcus Rashford and Antony.

Despite letting that duo depart and Rasmus Højlund struggling for goals, the club did not sign another striker - and Amorim believes that was the correct call for longer term benefit.

"Big teams, when you get in one context it’s really hard and then I understand that in January, and you are talking about Rashford and Antony, we lost these players and we didn’t bring new ones," he told reporters.

"It was a risk but I think that there are things here that are more important than to score 10 more goals this season.

"We are trying to do something that is more important. We can hurt the squad now but in the future it’s going to help the club so I think we are in that path."

United are in action on Sunday afternoon when they face Bournemouth.
