Manchester United are “closely monitoring” Sevilla midfielder Lucien Agoume and could formalise their interest with a “concrete offer” on one condition, according to a report from Spain.
Ruben Amorim recently bemoaned the “lack of pace” in his midfield unit after the frustrating 0-0 draw with Leeds United in pre-season.
None of the senior options at Old Trafford – Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro or Manuel Ugarte – are particularly mobile. The one option who is, 21-year-old Toby Collyer, is also expected to leave on loan.
United are on the hunt for a new midfielder this summer but the bulk of the club’s finances have been directed towards the misfiring forward line with over £130 million already spent to sign Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
A blockbuster move for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko is also underway with the German club demanding at least £65 million for their attacking starlet.
As such, there is little room left in the budget for a midfielder – with a growing sense that an existing midfielder may have to leave in order to facilitate a new option being brought in.
But if United are able to muster the funds to target a new midfielder then Spanish outlet Fichajes reveals Agoume is considered a “valuable addition” by Old Trafford executives.
Agoume, 23, has quietly emerged as a stand out performer in La Liga despite playing for an underperforming Sevilla side who finished 17th last season, coming perilously close to relegation.
The Frenchman offers a potent pairing of speed and strength, combined with excellent defensive instincts and an underrated technical skillset.
He has even drawn comparisons to legendary World Cup and Premier League winning star, N’Golo Kante – and there are few midfielders in recent memory who could inject more pace, as Amorim has demanded, into a team’s engine room than Kante.
Fichajes contend Agoume is on United’s “radar” with the club “valu[ing] his age [and] experience in top-flight leagues, such as Ligue 1 and LaLiga,” corroborating a report relayed by The Peoples Person last month of interest from the Red Devils and Arsenal.
There has been “no formal offer” but Sevilla are “aware” of the interest from Old Trafford. The report further reveals Agoume is open to a switch to the Premier League and would welcome an offer from a “major project” like United.
Fichajes concludes by stating United’s interest in the French powerhouse “could quickly turn into a concrete offer” if “any of its current midfielders leave”.
