Man United have reportedly decided not to pursue a move for Chelsea player Nicolas Jackson and have settled on two potential options in their search for a new striker.
The Senegal international has been linked with United in recent weeks amid speculation that he will leave Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window.
After signing Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, the Red Devils are looking to sign a new frontman following a disappointing campaign in front of goal, scoring 44 goals in 38 Premier League matches.
They reportedly made a last-ditch effort to sign Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt last week, but Liverpool completed a deal for the forward worth up to £79 million.
Having also missed out on Viktor Gyokeres, who joined Arsenal from Sporting CP for £54.8m plus £8.6m in add-ons last week, Man United have “narrowed down” their search to two names.
According to The Athletic, they’re looking at signing either Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa or Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.
United have not yet made a decision on which target to “advance” on, but are “in contact” on both players ” to establish the potential costs of each deal”.
That means a move for Jackson, a striker who was “under consideration” at Old Trafford, has been “ruled out due to Chelsea’s demands.”
United are said to be in the “evaluation stage” and accept that negotiations will not be swift as Aston Villa and Leipzig have put “significant price tags” on Watkins and Sesko respectively.
It’s claimed that United believe they can reach an agreement with Villa for Watkins in the region of £40m to £45m. Sesko would cost significantly more, between £69m to £78m. Newcastle United have also been linked with the 22-year-old Slovenia international.
Whichever player they decide to pursue, United will need to sell before they can buy. Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony have all been linked with moves away. The arrival of a new striker could also lead to Rasmus Hojlund’s exit.
