Manchester United tried to sign Hugo Ekitike but could not convince him about a switch to Old Trafford (h/t journalist David Ornstein).
Ekitike was one of the most in-demand strikers in the transfer market after bagging 22 goals and 12 assists for Eintracht Frankfurt last season.
Liverpool fended off competition from Newcastle United and the Red Devils to sign the Frenchman for around €91 million.
Man Utd will have to turn their attention elsewhere in search of a centre-forward.
They have already added Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to the ranks but need a natural centre-forward to lead the line.
Their radar has reportedly landed on RB Leipzig ace Benjamin Sesko.
The Slovenian is a talented striker, but there are doubts about whether he can handle the step up to the Premier League.
Fans fear he could follow the same path as Rasmus Hojlund, a talented striker who arrived with much hype and for a significant amount of money.
A move for Viktor Gyokeres should have been on the cards, but he has his heart set on a transfer to Arsenal.
United have been offered the chance by intermediaries close to Sporting CP to bid for the Swede.
If there is even the slightest chance that Man Utd can sign Gyokeres, they need to swoop quickly.
