As Manchester United’s campaign heads into its decisive phase, the club’s ever-fluctuating injury list has once again taken centre stage. With European ambitions still alive and a congested fixture calendar looming, manager Ruben Amorim has been handed a handful of positive updates – though not without a few caveats.
From the defensive reshuffles forced by Matthijs de Ligt’s absence to the cautious optimism surrounding Amad Diallo and Kobbie Mainoo, this is a period of delicate balancing for Amorim and his medical staff. Here’s the latest injury outlook from Old Trafford.
After picking up a knock in United’s loss to Nottingham Forest, Matthijs de Ligt was ruled out of the Manchester derby. With no confirmed timeline, the Dutchman remains a major doubt for the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final against Lyon.
“Matta, he has an injury. Let’s see how long it is going to take,” Amorim told MUTV before the derby draw.
His absence has highlighted United’s precarious depth in central defence, especially with Lisandro Martínez unavailable and Jonny Evans still sidelined. While Leny Yoro has returned, the need for clarity around De Ligt’s condition grows as the fixtures pile up.

Amad Diallo’s injury initially sparked fears that he might miss the remainder of the season, having suffered ankle ligament damage in training. However, his recovery has defied early estimates.

“He’s doing quite well,” Amorim said. “We hope to have him before the season is finished. We’ll see, but he’s anxious to play, so we are waiting for him.”
Diallo’s form before his injury had been a bright spot in an otherwise inconsistent campaign, and his creativity could prove pivotal in the run-in, especially in Europe.
Potential return date: May
Kobbie Mainoo has been sorely missed since sustaining a muscle issue during the FA Cup win over Leicester in early February. Originally ruled out for six weeks, the young midfielder has now resumed full training.
“Kobbie Mainoo is training with us, we want to be careful, again, with our players, but maybe he’s going to be in our squad,” Amorim confirmed following the stalemate against Manchester City.
With midfield cohesion vital heading into the Lyon double-header, Mainoo’s presence could be a timely stabilising force.

Teenager Ayden Heaven, signed from Arsenal in January, made an instant impression before suffering a foot injury against Leicester. The initial fears, prompted by his being stretchered off, have now eased.
“It was not so serious,” Amorim said. “He is recovering, [he is] not ready to play, but he will return this season for sure.”
Heaven’s adaptability has been useful during the club’s injury crisis, and while his return isn’t immediate, it’s likely he’ll feature again in the final stretch.
Potential return date: April
Lisandro Martínez’s season is over after surgery on a torn ACL, while Jonny Evans continues to struggle with a back issue that has kept him out since December. “Recovering” was all Amorim would offer on the latter, whose leadership might still be required if others falter.

Man United’s injury narrative this season has reflected the volatility of their performances – peaks undermined by absences, stability constantly slipping from their grasp. Yet, as spring arrives and the stakes increase, there’s cautious optimism at Carrington. Amorim’s careful management of fitness and returns may just dictate whether silverware or disappointment awaits.
