Manchester United are in negotiations with Bryan Mbeumo over a switch to Old Trafford this summer with Brentford willing to sell their star player for £50 million, according to a report.
Ben Jacobs (talkSPORT) reveals the Red Devils “held talks” directly with Mbeumo as the club continues to explore options to upgrade Ruben Amorim’s misfiring forward line.
Tweet: “Manchester United have held talks with Bryan Mbuemo. Brentford value Mbuemo around £50m.”
A deal was agreed yesterday for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ attacker Matheus Cunha while talks are ongoing over a move for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.
But United are exploring other Premier League-proven options with Mbeumo high on the list of targets, along with Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo.
Mbeumo, 25, has scored an impressive 20 goals, while also providing seven assists, in the Premier League this season for Brentford. No United player has reached double figures for goals in the league, by comparison.
Only three players – Mohammed Salah, Alexander Isak, and Erling Haaland – have scored more often than the Cameroonian international, while playing for sides far higher up the table.
Mbeumo is also very hard-working – a prerequisite to play under Bees manager Thomas Frank – and is positionally versatile, having lined up as a right winger, a right-sided number ten, and even at right wing-back at the Gtech Community Stadium.
It’s this combination of a track record of goals and the ability to play in multiple positions in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system which is likely driving United’s interest in the 25-year-old.
Previous reports had placed Brentford’s valuation at £60 million but the Bees are now open to offers around £50 million – a sharp drop which will have put Old Trafford officials on red-alert with a host of Premier League clubs also keen on the winger, including Newcastle.
Rich Fay (Manchester World) contends United could look to finance a move for Mbeumo by selling wantaway winger Alejandro Garnacho, who was told by Amorim to look for a new club over the weekend.
“Manchester United could use the proposed sale of Alejandro Garnacho to finance a summer move for Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo. Ruben Amorim would like to add two attacking midfielders to his side in the coming months, with Mbeumo viewed as another ideal addition to the squad alongside Wolves talisman Matheus Cunha.”
In this scenario, it would be a case of ‘one-in, one-out’ on the wing for the Red Devils with the club likely to be hoping to command a comparable fee of around £50 million for Garnacho’s exit this summer.
