Manchester United have reportedly established contact with Eintracht Frankfurt to register their interest in Hugo Ekitike.
United are in the market for a striker after completing a deal for Matheus Cunha, who has joined from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Boosting the team’s goal output is believed to be United’s primary agenda this summer, after an extremely poor 2024/25 season that saw the club finish in 15th place and with a humiliating -10 goal difference.
Rasmus Hojlund’s future at Old Trafford looks increasingly uncertain, with Serie A giants Inter Milan circling. Even if the underwhelming Dane stays put, it’s painfully clear United can’t pin their hopes on him. Signing a striker isn’t optional, but essential.
United had earmarked Liam Delap as their priority signing up front, but the young striker rejected their approach in favour of Chelsea, lured by the promise of Champions League football. With that door firmly shut, United have been forced back to the drawing board, casting their net wide as they assess a host of alternatives including Viktor Gyokeres (Sporting CP), Jean-Philippe Mateta (Crystal Palace), Victor Osimhen (Napoli), Benjamin Sesko (RB Leipzig) and Randal Kolo Muani (Paris Saint-Germain).
Another player that previously mentioned to be on United’s radar is Ekitike.
Back in April, a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United had held talks with Ekitike’s camp over a potential switch to Old Trafford.
Ekitike has openly admitted to being a United fan – a detail that, while minor, almost certainly makes him a more appealing option in the eyes of a number of supporters.
Now, Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has given a major update on United’s pursuit of the 22-year-old, indicating that initial club-to-club negotiations have taken place.
Plettenberg wrote on X, “Manchester United have now officially entered the race for Hugo Ekitike!”
“United made contact with Eintracht Frankfurt within the last 48 hours, expressed concrete interest, and gathered all relevant information.”
“Liverpool and Chelsea remain in the race – and now Man United are in as well. Price tag: €100m.”
Ekitike enjoyed a superb 2024/25 campaign, notching an impressive 22 goals and providing an additional 12 assists in 48 appearances.
He started his professional career with Reims before making the jump to Paris Saint-Germain. Things didn’t work out in the French capital but he has since bounced back to for since moving to Frankfurt, boasting a record of 26 goals and 14 assists in 64 games.
