Goalkeeper Uncertainty Rumbles On at Manchester United

Bulka and Martinez Emerge as Options

Manchester United’s summer window is shaping up as one of aggressive intent, particularly in attack. but quietly, and perhaps more critically, discussions are ongoing over who should stand between the posts next season.

As Ben Jacobs reported on X, “Understand Nice’s Marcin Bułka is one name on Manchester United’s list of potential goalkeepers.” At 6ft 6in, the Nice shot-stopper is physically commanding and technically sound, and thanks to his club’s ownership by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS group, he may also be accessible without the usual complications.

But Bułka is not alone. “Emi Martinez also on United’s radar along with Atletico Madrid,” Jacobs adds. The Argentine World Cup winner, currently at Aston Villa, would offer proven experience and leadership at the back, qualities United have lacked in recent seasons.

Onana’s Future Yet to Be Defined

The big question, of course, is whether United want a true No.2 or a new No.1. “Man Utd still determining whether to go for a number one. Andre Onana hasn’t been informed he’s surplus to requirements, but it’s an open situation,” writes Jacobs.

Onana’s debut season was marred by inconsistency and high-profile errors. His distribution often impressed, but lapses in concentration cost United crucial points. A summer review of his position is no surprise, especially as interest from Saudi Arabia quietly builds in the background.

Should United choose to replace rather than supplement him, Onana’s exit is likely. A demotion to second choice is improbable at Old Trafford, both for dressing-room dynamics and financial practicality.

Pathway Cleared for Bulka Transfer

In Bulka’s case, the logistical hurdles that scuppered United’s previous attempts to sign from Nice, such as last summer’s collapse of the Jean-Clair Todibo deal, no longer apply.

Back then, both clubs were competing in the Europa League, and UEFA rules prohibited transfers between clubs with shared ownership structures in the same competition. This season, United’s absence from European football opens the door. A deal that was off-limits 12 months ago could now be rubber-stamped with relative ease.

With Martinez’s situation at Villa shaped by PSR requirements, there is also movement expected on that front. Villa may be open to offers for their No.1, especially if funds are required to balance their books ahead of the June 30 deadline.

Decision Will Define Amorim’s Defence

The goalkeeper debate is not just a subplot, it’s central to how Ruben Amorim wants to structure his defence. He prefers calm, technically sound keepers who build from the back. Onana was supposed to be that. But if trust has eroded, a change may be necessary.

Whether United go bold with a new starter or cautious with competition will say much about how they view this new project. Either way, expect movement in the weeks ahead,  and perhaps a new figure commanding the Stretford End goal next season.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a United fan’s perspective, this isn’t shocking, it’s overdue. We all wanted Andre Onana to succeed. We defended him early on when he was still finding rhythm, adjusting to Premier League pace, and learning the system. But after two seasons of inconsistency, fans are right to question whether he’s the long-term answer.

That said, dumping him for the sake of change would be rash. If we’re going to move on, it needs to be for someone clearly better, and that’s where Emi Martinez stands out. He’s a leader, a winner, and a character who wouldn’t shrink under the Old Trafford spotlight.

Marcin Bulka is intriguing, tall, agile, and rated highly in Ligue 1. But is he ready to step into this pressure cooker? He might make sense as a challenger, but as a first-choice? That’s a gamble.

In truth, this decision can’t be about finances or ownership convenience. It has to be about stability and presence. If Amorim wants to build a new back line, the goalkeeper must be the foundation. Whether it’s Onana, Martinez, or Bulka, it has to be right. No room for sentiment. No room for second guesses.
