Manchester City are pushing to finalise a new contract for midfield lynchpin Rodri “as soon as possible,” according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.
The 29-year-old Spanish international, widely considered one of the best holding midfielders in world football, is currently under contract at the Etihad until 2027. However, City are keen to extend and significantly improve his deal to reflect his status as a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s side—and to fend off interest from Real Madrid.
The LaLiga giants have been linked with Rodri in recent months, fuelling speculation over a potential future move. But City’s proactive move to tie him down well into his 30s signals their intent to retain the core of their squad following another title-winning campaign.
Rodri, who famously quipped that “Real Madrid can buy me in FIFA” when previously asked about Los Blancos' interest, has been instrumental in City’s domestic and European dominance since his arrival from Atlético de Madrid in 2019.
With contract talks now in motion, City will hope to swiftly secure the long-term future of one of their most indispensable players.
