Pep Guardiola’s side dealt big blows ahead of Sunday’s clash with Liverpool

A bad season for Manchester City got worse on Wednesday night.

A Kylian Mbappe hat-trick saw Real Madrid thrash Man City 3-1 in the Santiago Bernabeu, with the European champions winning 6-2 on aggregate.

Pep Guardiola’s side had raised confidence by beating Newcastle 4-0 last time out in the Premier League but all that came crashing down in the Spanish capital.

Even worse for City is the fact Erling Haaland missed the game. The striker came off against Newcastle and while Guardiola suggested Haaland’s injury was not serious, he did not feature at all despite making the squad.

With Liverpool up next in the League, City are in relatively dire straits. With that in mind, here’s a look at the latest Manchester City injuries.

Haaland was part of the squad who travelled to Madrid but did not get off the bench, seemingly still feeling the knee injury he suffered against Newcastle last week.

The striker went down holding his knee after landing awkwardly and briefly continued before eventually going off. At first, it seemed as if he would feature against Madrid, but that did not prove to be the case in the end.

Speaking before the game, Guardiola said: “He was close but not enough. He trained a bit yesterday, but we spoke this morning, and he said he doesn't feel good so we choose another [option].”

Speaking after the game, Guardiola added: “He had discomfort when walking, for example on stairs. We spoke and he said ‘I’m not ready, I don’t feel good.”

Potential return date: Unknown

Kevin De Bruyne

Kevin De Bruyne has been dealing with injuries all season, though did appear to have recovered in recent weeks.

The Belgian was left on the bench for the Newcastle game, which at first seemed a measure to rest him ahead of the trip to Madrid.

However, like Haaland, the playmaker stayed on the bench despite City chasing a result.

No update was forthcoming from Guardiola, who is due to speak ahead of the Liverpool game later this week.

Potential return date: Unknown

John Stones

Key defender John Stones is another to have struggled with injuries this season. Sadly for the England international, those problems continued in the Bernabeu.

Stones limped off after appearing to pull a muscle when attempting to play a pass only minutes after Mbappe had given Madrid an early lead.

Manuel Akanji

Fellow defender Manuel Akanji suffered an injury during the first leg of the Madrid tie, a dramatic late 3-2 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola confirmed Akanji underwent surgery on an abductor injury and initial reports suggested the Swiss international was likely to have been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Still, the City boss hinted the defender could in fact return between eight and ten weeks from now.

Potential return date: April/May 2025

Oscar Bobb

Much was expected of Oscar Bobb this season after a promising pre-season. A leg injury, however, has ruled the winger out of the entire campaign thus far.

Bobb did return to City training earlier this year but is said to have suffered a fresh setback since and his return date remains unclear.

Potential return date: Unknown

Rodri

Rodri’s injury is seen as one of the major causes for City’s slide this season. The midfielder underwent surgery on a serious knee injury suffered against Arsenal in September and isn’t expected to feature again this season.

The Spanish international has previously suggested he could return for this summer’s Club World Cup but Guardiola has insisted there is “no pressure” on him to rush his comeback.

At this stage, next season seems the most likely return date.

Potential return date: Summer 2025
