Fresh injury issues for Pep Guardiola after thrilling win over Crystal Palace
Manchester City’s injury problems are growing, with two key stars needing to prove their fitness ahead of the upcoming trip to face Everton.
Pep Guardiola’s side beat Crystal Palace 5-2 on Saturday as they came from two goals down, but Ederson came off in that match with an injury.
Phil Foden missed the fixture entirely, while defensive trio John Stones, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji remain on the sidelines, along with Rodri.
Ederson produced a brilliant assist during City’s win over Crystal Palace, before his match was then brought to a premature end.
The goalkeeper appeared to pick up a groin injury as he played a pass out, and limped off with 20 minutes to go.
“I don’t know. He made the pass and said he felt something and he couldn’t continue,” Guardiola said after the match when asked for an update.
“He’s had some discomfort in the last month, two months ago, and it’s come back today.”
Potential return date: Unknown
Phil Foden was left out of the squad against Crystal Palace.
The midfielder started a week earlier in the Manchester derby but picked up an ankle injury when he was on the receiving end of a heavy challenge.
Foden was unable to shake that off to face the Eagles, but will hope to make a quick return to action.
“He had an injury at Old Trafford and he didn’t recover well,” Guardiola said.

Erling Haaland has been out since he was forced off in the second-half against Bournemouth last month.
The striker left the Vitality Stadium with his left ankle in a protective boot and remains on the sidelines, but it is expected that he will feature again before the end of the season.
Guardiola said at the end of March: "They told me the doctors say between five to seven weeks.
"So hopefully the end of the season and by the Club World Cup he will be ready.”
Potential return date: May 2025
Manuel Akanji tore his abductor muscle as Real Madrid knocked City out of the Champions League earlier this season.
It was said at the time that the defender would miss between eight and ten weeks after surgery was required.
That timeline would suggest Akanji will feature before the end of the season, though a return is not believed to be imminent.
Potential return date: May 2025
Like Akanji, John Stones has been on the sidelines since he picked up an injury against Real Madrid.
There were initially fears that the centre-back would require surgery on the thigh issue, however it was decided that was not necessary.
It was expected that Stones would be out for up to ten weeks, putting his return at some time around early May.

Nathan Ake came off at half-time in City’s FA Cup win over Plymouth in March.
The defender then underwent surgery on a fracture in his left foot, with the club revealing that it was a problem that had “caused him discomfort during the course of his career”.
Ake faces a race to play against in the Premier League this season, but should be available for the Club World Cup.
Potential return date: May 2025
Rodri has not given up hope of playing his part for City later this summer.
The Ballon d’Or winner suffered an ACL injury in September and has therefore missed the bulk of the season, but it has been suggested that he could feature in the Club World Cup.
Rodri is in individual training, but Guardiola has made it clear he will not rush the midfielder back into action.
Asked about Rodri’s potential return, the City boss said: “I don’t know. Listen, it would be nice if he played tomorrow but don’t do a wrong decision right now and make a step back.

“The injury, the doctors said seven months, eight months. [We’ve] arrived at six months so he’s behaving on the pitch really well already. But competition is completely different.
“We will see, step by step. I rely a lot on his word but what the doctors say, what his physio says. Not to say ‘target [Club] World Cup’ and after we’re going to lose you for many, many months again.
“We have to be sure that he’s fine and after he’ll be involved.”
Potential return date: Summer 2025
