The Antonio Cordero Newcastle United transfer saga looks finally to be coming to a conclusion.
An official Malaga CF announcement (see below) confirming that the teenage winger has refused to sign a contract extension.
The Spanish club stating that (sometimes also referred to as Antonito) Antonio Cordero won’t be at the club next season.
For some time now it has been the worst kept secret that the teenager is heading to Newcastle United and the Spanish media all take this for granted as well.
As you can see from the tone of their brief ‘Best of luck’ farewell, Malaga CF not happy at all to be losing one of their best young talents.
Official Malaga CF announcement – 2 June 2025:
Antonito announces he will not renew with Málaga CF
The footballer has communicated his decision not to renew his contract with the club, and as such, he will no longer be part of Málaga CF at the end of this June.
Antonito Cordero will bring his spell at Málaga Club de Fútbol to an end when his contract expires on 30th June 2025.
Through his representation agency, the player from Jerez de la Frontera has communicated his decision not to renew with the club.
Best of luck, Antonio.’
The Mag report – 15 April 2025:
Antonio Cordero has now signed for Newcastle United according to a new ‘exclusive’ on Tuesday.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano claiming (see below) that the deal has been completed.
Romano saying an official announcement will be forthcoming.
The 18 year old winger will be out of contract at the end of June 2025, so can now sign an agreement with another club ahead of the next transfer window.
I am assuming that Newcastle United will though still need to pay compensation to Malaga, either agreed, or if no agreement can be reached, the amount would be decided by the authorities.
It has long been expected (see reports below) that Antonio Cordero was going to sign for Newcastle United.
The Mag report – 25 February 2025:
At the end of January we reported (see below) that Antonio Cordero was in talks with Newcastle United.
The young winger was expected to sign a pre-contract agreement in the near future.
He is currently with Malaga but his contract due to end in June 2025, meaning he could talk to Newcastle United and then sign that pre-contract agreement, to then officially join in the summer.
Back then, it was said that talks had gone nowhere as Malaga tried to get Antonio Cordero to sign a new contract, now media in Spain are saying that both parties have confirmed that no further talks have been held in recent weeks.
With Malaga seemingly having accepted that their young star will be leaving this summer.
The club unable to offer the level of wages needed, with also the player and his agents having no interest in agreeing to what they considered a very excessively high selling clause figure that could then be triggered by another club if Cordero agreed the new contract on the terms offered.
Now Diario Sur in Spain are reporting that agreement between Newcastle United and Antonio Cordero is expected to be officially announced soon.
They report that whilst other Premier League clubs including Arsenal and Man City, are interested as well, it looks for sure that the teenager is heading to Newcastle United.
Diario Sur say that their information is that the negotiations between Newcastle United and the agents of Antonio Cordero are close to being finalised, with some of the player’s family having already visited Tyneside to meet club officials and check out the facilities at Newcastle United, in advance of the expected announcement.
Newcastle United are in talks with Antonio Cordero.
The Mail reporting that a pre-contract agreement looks set to happen.
Antonio Cordero is set to be out of contract at the end of June 2025, so Newcastle United able to have these talks and agree a pre-contract at this point, with the player then moving to St James’ Park this summer. Obviously, that depending on the player and Newcastle United reaching agreement.
Whilst we haven’t seen any automatic first team contenders coming into Newcastle United these last couple of windows, the club continuing to look to aggressively pursue their policy of bringing in as many young players as possible who have the potential to progress.
Having turned 18 in only November, Antonio Cordero very much in this category.
Having made his debut for Malaga at the age of just 16, the teenage winger has now become a regular for the Spanish club in the second tier this season.
Already 22 league appearances this campaign, including 13 as a starter.
Antonio Cordero is part of the Spain Under 19s set-up currently and the winger has already scored four league goals this season for Malaga and got six assists.
