Luton Town are preparing for life back in League One next year following a disappointing return to the Championship.

Matt Bloomfield’s side finished 22nd in the table, with the club suffering a second consecutive relegation after they came 19th in the Premier League in the previous campaign. The Hatters will be hoping to bounce straight back with promotion to the second tier, but will face stiff competition.

With Kenilworth Road to be set aside for a new stadium, the club will be hoping they won’t be competing in the third tier when they start competing in Power Court.

On that topic, we take a look at all the latest details surrounding the ground, ahead of their League One return…

Power Court expected capacity

Kenilworth Road was the smallest stadium in the Championship last season, with Luton able to host up to 11,850 supporters at their home games.

For comparison, the biggest stadium in the division was at Sunderland, with the Stadium of Light capable of hosting 48,707 fans in Wearside.

Given Luton’s ambitions of returning to the top flight in the future, the club will need a greater capacity to help them compete against clubs of the size of the Black Cats, who gained promotion last season.

The club revealed in April of this year, via their official website, that their new stadium will be able to host up to 25,000.

This is an increase of more than double Kenilworth Road’s capacity, which should make for a big difference at future home games.

The League One side are hoping that the new ground will also boast greater acoustics, which will help to create an even better atmosphere.

“The acoustics will be far better, right around the ground,” wrote the club, via their website.

“The unique roof structure will retain its acoustic energy and will retrospectively echo a roofline synonymous with traditional English football stadia.

“Ultimately, the 25,000-seat stadium will mark a new chapter in our club’s history, with modern facilities, improved accessibility, and a community-first mindset.”

Power Court’s completion date

Ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, Luton will be again preparing to compete in Kenilworth Road.

But there won’t be too many more seasons left in the stadium, so the club will be aiming to get back to at least the Championship for their final year with this as their home.

Luton still have a few years to go to achieve that feat, with Power Court not set to be ready until the start of the 2028/29 season.

That means that there will be at least three more years competing at their current ground.

Their difficult form on the pitch in the last year will have taken some of the attention away from making progress with Power Court, with the team struggling for results in their return to the Championship.

Rob Edwards was dismissed as manager midway through the campaign, leading to Bloomfield taking charge.

However, he was unable to turn around the side’s form enough to get out of the bottom three, with an inferior goal difference to Hull City proving the difference between survival and relegation.
