Luis Enrique has admitted that his Paris Saint-Germain side were “very lucky” to triumph over Tottenham in the UEFA Super Cup.

The meeting between the winners of Europe’s two major club competitions from last season appeared to be going the way of the Europa League holders on Wednesday night.

Micky Van de Ven and Cristian Romero - appointed as the new Spurs captain before kick-off - scored either side of half-time to leave the north London outfit in dreamland with five minutes remaining.

However, Lee Kang-In pulled one back and Goncalo Ramos then snatched an equaliser in stoppage-time, before PSG went on to claim another European trophy by winning the penalty shootout 4-3.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Enrique agreed with former Tottenham manager Glenn Hoddle that his PSG side were second best for large spells of the game.

He said: “For 80 minutes we didn’t deserve that, I think Tottenham deserved to win the match because we can feel that they were in form.

“They had been training for six weeks, they played a great match. We have been training only for six days but sometimes football is unfair.

“I have to say that we were very lucky in the last 10 minutes, we could have scored two goals and I have to say that my players fought until the last minute like our supporters.

“But football is unpredictable and in that sense I have to say we were very lucky.”

The reason for PSG’s lack of preparation for the UEFA Super Cup clash was their participation at the World Cup earlier in the summer.

Having reached the final of the competition which was played on July 13, 2025, Enrique admitted the short turnaround had a massive impact on the performance from his side.

He added: “Absolutely, from the first minute when the players touched the ball, when the players played without having the time to think about where you have to pass.

“It is difficult to play the way we want to play if you don’t train or have the time to train and I have to say that it was like a miracle.”
