But mayor scores own goal by confusing Chelsea and Arsenal women’s teams

London mayor Sadiq Khan took a swipe at Manchester as he congratulated Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur on their cup-winning success.

Sir Sadiq said Palace’s FA Cup victory over Manchester City last weekend, and Spurs’ victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final on Wednesday night, meant it was “London 2-0 Manchester.”

Though he did not mention Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham by name, this may be seen as sly dig at his fellow Labour “metro mayor” and will continue the rivalry between the capital and Manchester.

But Sir Sadiq made a gaffe when he tried to also praise Chelsea’s women’s team for achieving a domestic treble – by wishing them luck in the Women’s Champions League final against Barcelona.

In fact, it is Arsenal Women, not Chelsea Women, who will take on Barcelona Women on Saturday in the final in Lisbon – after Chelsea were beaten 8-2 on aggregate by the Catalan superstar team.

Sir Sadiq, speaking at Mayor’s Question Time at City Hall, said: “There is only one place to start and that is by celebrating the triumphs of two of London’s football clubs – Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur.

“I want to congratulate Steve Parish, Oliver Glasner and all the players and staff at Crystal Palace on their heroic history-making victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup at Wembley on Saturday.

“The Eagles did south London proud, and the whole team deserve not only immense credit but their place in the record books.

“Congratulations to Crystal Palace and everyone associated with the club on winning their first major trophy and making their fans feel ‘Glad All Over’.”

Glad All Over, by the Dave Clark Five, is the main song sung by Palace fans.

Sir Sadiq added: “And congratulations to Daniel Levy, Ange Postecoglou and all the Spurs players, staff and fans on their Europa League success last night.

“It’s good to see north London and south London doing so well. I think that is London 2, Manchester 0.”

During the meeting, Sir Sadiq was reminded by Labour assembly Bassam Mahfouz about Chelsea Women’s 3-0 victory over Manchester United Women in the Women’s FA Cup last Sunday, which saw the Blues claim all three domestic trophies and remain unbeaten throughout the season.

“Can I thank the member for reminding me about Chelsea ladies beating another Manchester team over the weekend – a comprehensive victory,” Sir Sadiq said.

But he appeared to say that Chelsea Women rather than Arsenal Women had made it to the Champions League final.

“Chelsea ladies will show they are a force in Europe as well now – we are hoping they beat Barcelona on this occasion, as they have not done on previous occasions, next season,” he said.

Sir Sadiq, a lifelong Liverpool fan, said he hoped to make it to Anfield on Sunday to see Liverpool be presented their 20th league title. They will be facing Crystal Palace in the final game of the season.

“You never change your team,” Sir Sadiq said. “That is why I’m trying to get to Anfield on Sunday for the 20th [league] title for the great, mighty Liverpool.”
