When Arne Slot took charge of Liverpool, the questions weren’t about whether he could win trophies, but whether he could keep pace with the ghost of Jurgen Klopp. It didn’t take long for answers to emerge. One season in and the Dutchman had done what so many had tried and failed to do — bring the Premier League trophy back to Anfield.
Slot’s Liverpool were not just winners, they were dominant. There was a clarity to their football, a certainty in execution, and a hunger that overwhelmed most opponents. And now, fresh off the euphoria of title celebrations, Liverpool have done what great clubs often do — they’ve strengthened from a position of power.
Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong have arrived, not to plug gaps, but to push an already formidable squad into uncharted territory. Wirtz, in particular, is not just another marquee name. “There is no such thing as a sure-fire winner in this business either, but I suspect Florian Wirtz is as close as you get in the modern game,” noted BBC Sport pundit Pat Nevin.

To prise Wirtz from the grasp of Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Real Madrid speaks volumes about the club’s pulling power under Slot. At a rumoured £100 million before add-ons, it is an almighty statement, one that places a target squarely on Liverpool’s back.
Nevin didn’t hold back in his assessment of the pressure this places on Slot, writing, “With Kerkez, the exciting Jeremie Frimpong and the fabulous Georgian keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, Arne Slot has put himself under huge pressure because just about everyone has them as favourites to retain their title. I wouldn’t argue with that for a second.”
Pressure is often a by-product of success, and in Slot’s case, it is now a constant companion. Last season’s triumph was built largely on Klopp’s foundation. Federico Chiesa was the only addition given a proper chance, and even he was used sparingly. It made Liverpool’s tally of 84 points — 25 wins, 9 draws and just 4 losses — all the more impressive.
But this summer, the club is moving decisively. With several outgoings expected to balance the books, especially those who fell short of expectations, Liverpool are gearing up not for consolidation, but domination.
There is a fine line between ambition and overreach. Liverpool’s business in the market so far suggests a plan that is both bold and calculated. Slot has inherited a squad with quality and depth, but now the expectations are recalibrated. With over two months left in the transfer window, there is time to refine the squad even further.
What’s clear is that Slot no longer has the element of surprise. Liverpool are champions, and champions are hunted. Every decision from here on — tactical, strategic or transfer-related — will be scrutinised. Slot’s honeymoon was glorious, but what comes next will determine whether this is a new era of dominance or just a fleeting moment of brilliance.
