Liverpool transfers: Agent CONFIRMS 'there were talks' but player has rejected Reds | OneFootball

The agent of Juventus’s latest signing, Michele Di Gregorio, has confirmed there were talks with Liverpool. The player rejected the Reds, however.

It seems Liverpool did in fact try to sign Michele Di Gregorio this summer. The Italian goalkeeper has now left Monza for Juventus, a move that recognises him as one of the absolute best goalkeepers in Serie A.

The Reds certainly thought he was just that, too. Di Gregori's agent, Carlo Belloni, has admitted that talks were held with Liverpool, but they ultimately went with Juventus.

“Yes, there were talks with Liverpool and obviously we were very pleased,” Belloni said, per TV Play. “But we had given our word and we had clear ideas after Monza."

Those ideas were heading to Turin as Juventus's new no.1 goalkeeper. And in truth, the Reds were never competing with that.

Di Gregorio almost certainly wasn't courted as a replacement for Alisson Becker. Liverpool would have wanted him as backup to the Brazilian, playing the games that Caoimhin Kelleher has over the last few years.

And, of course, the position as Alisson's replacement once the Brazilian is no longer the no.1.

But given Juventus offered Di Gregorio the spot as a first-choice goalkeeper for one of the world's biggest clubs, it was always an uphill battle. It'll have to be someone different heading to Anfield - if they even still want a goalkeeper.

Caoimhin Kelleher hasn't hidden the fact that he wants to be a regular starter going forward. That's not happening at Liverpool unless Alisson leaves.

And so the feeling is that the Irishman heads off to a new pasture, with the Reds bringing in a replacement from somewhere. But while everyone has expected that this summer, talk around it has certainly died down.

There isn't a great push by anyone to pay Liverpool's asking price for Kelleher (£25m), nor are the Reds linked with a string of goalkeepers. The fact that Adrian is also departing makes it a bigger ask of the club, too - do they want to lose two-thirds of their senior goalkeepers in one summer?

We'll see were it goes from here. Di Gregorio certainly isn't on his way to replace Kelleher, though.
