Liverpool legend Luis Suarez has played his last game for the Uruguay national team, making the 143rd and final appearance for his country.

Suarez left Liverpool in 2014 and now plays his football for Inter Miami, but he is thought of by many as one of the best strikers in history.

Much like some of the most famous moments in Suarez’s career, his farewell from the Uruguay national team wasn’t all plain sailing.

Suarez captained his nation to a 0-0 draw against Paraguay and picked up a yellow card in the process.

Suarez’s spoiled farewell

El Pistolero is the Uruguay national team’s all-time top goalscorer with 69 goals, but the former Barcelona man was desperate to break the 70 mark and he was left disappointed when he couldn’t do so.

The stalemate, and the fact that Suarez wasn’t able to score his 70th international goal, left the legendary striker visibly annoyed, but the celebrations of his career began soon after the final whistle anyway.

A number of Suarez’s former team-mates including Sebastian Coates, Diego Forlan and Diego Godin joined the players on the pitch before legendary former Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez made an appearance. Darwin Nunez missed the game because of suspension.

Although Suarez is undoubtedly one of the most gifted players to ever wear the Liverpool shirt, the club has progressed a lot since his departure.

The era of Jurgen Klopp has been and gone and now Arne Slot, who played in the Netherlands at the same time as Suarez, is the head coach at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah has replaced Suarez as Liverpool’s talisman and Virgil van Dijk is now leading Liverpool as they enter a new era.

The Reds are unbeaten in their first three Premier League games and most recently beat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Suarez may have retired from international football but he is still terrorising defences in the MLS and his countryman Darwin Nunez could finally fulfil his potential this year under his new head coach.
