Both are self-sustainable organisations, but a lot of money is at stake, in terms of the decisions that are made in each team, and it doesn't take a lot for one asset to be seen as favoured over another.

Last week, following a controversial trade made by the Red Sox, fans of the side were left perplexed, and some looked to Liverpool's business to try and work out why such a decision was made.

Wirtz had nothing to do with the Devers trade

To those who don't know about Major League Baseball, the Boston Red Sox, or Rafael Devers, this might make little to no sense to you, but I'll try to clarify some things.

Earlier this week, Devers was traded to the San Francisco Giants in a move that stunned fans. He had only recently signed a 10-year contract extension in 2023 worth $313.5m, yet he was taken off the roster in favour of bringing other five players in. The Giants would pay the remaining $250m.

In purely sporting terms, it made no sense that the player was sent packing. He was a three-time All-Star and the fans adored him. In football terms, I imagine this is like prime Mohamed Salah leaving.

This was a business decision, which would have been sanctioned by FSG and following the news that Liverpool had agreed a £116m ($157.8m) deal for Florian Wirtz, claims of favouritism came out.

MLB Scoops on X posted: "... Sources have indicated that John Henry and co. will be prioritising Liverpool Football Club for the time being". This created a conversation that Liverpool fans hadn't considered before - FSG strategically using their portfolio to fuel different endeavours.
