On Monday morning, Liverpool confirmed the signing of Will Wright from Salford City, with the 17-year-old making a permanent transfer to the Merseyside club.

Though Liverpool don’t confirm Wright’s contract length, given he’s still under 18, the longest he could sign on for is three years – or until 2028.

Arsenal were also in for the striker, even reaching an agreement with Salford City. But they never agreed personal terms with the player, and Liverpool did.

In terms of why Wright chose Liverpool, reports have suggested the player preferred to stay in the north west, with Anfield significantly closer to his previous home in Salford than the Emirates Stadium in London.

Yet there have also been suggestions the player preferred the sporting plan laid out for him by Liverpool. In spite of Arsenal’s agreement with Salford, it seems they were never that close to convincing the player.

Arsenal had planned to integrate Wright in their u21 side, and Liverpool intend to do the same. In fact, they’ve already given him his first u21 appearance in a goalless friendly draw with Hull City.

Only recently turning 17, Wright had already made four competitive appearances for League Two Salford City prior to his departure. He was also heavily involved in senior pre-season this summer.

There have been suggestions Arsenal could turn to Igor Tyjon of Blackburn Rovers as a potential alternative academy forward, but the Gunners have already seen one bid for the player turned down.
