As the 2024-2025 season drew to a close, Liverpool players were preparing to celebrate winning the title alongside the supporters. It was a celebration filled with emotion, owing to the fact that people didn’t get to celebrate back in 2020 thanks to the global health crisis of the time.

For one player, though, there was even more emotion piled on top of that, with Trent Alexander-Arnold knowing that he would be leaving to play for Real Madrid. For the Reds, replacing him is the key thing, which is why the move to bring in Jeremie Frimpong is one that makes sense for all parties.

He Meets the Homegrown Criteria

Jeremie Frimpong was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on the tenth of December 2000 but was brought up in the suburb of Clayton to the east of Manchester. As a youngster, he began playing for two local sides in AFC Clayton and Clayton Villa. That caught the eye of scouts for both Liverpool and Manchester City when he was named the best player at a youth tournament. The presence of Manchester City near where his family were based meant that he chose to join the club’s Academy, but the Reds rarely completely forget about a player that they’re interested in.

As a result, Frimpong remained on Liverpool’s radar, who watched him make his way through the ranks at one of their Premier League rivals. When he departed City for Celtic in 2019, he became a trusted member of the team before catching the eye of German team Bayer Leverkusen. It was his time at the City Academy, in addition to the fact that he was brought up in the United Kingdom from the age of seven, that allowed him to qualify as a homegrown player, in spite of the fact that he was born in the Netherlands and plays football for the Dutch international team, and that is ideal for Liverpool.

An Attack-Minded Left-Back

Arne Slot is looking to build a team that is capable of taking on all shapes and sizes of opponents. With that in mind, it is clear that Conor Bradley is capable of being the more defensively minded player who can be used when it looks likely that the opposition is going to attack down Liverpool’s right-hand side. For teams that the Reds will be keen to flat-track bully, however, Jeremie Frimpong will be the ideal addition to Slot’s lineup. He is a speedy player who is able to get down the wing and offer decent end product, whilst the fact that he’s so quick will also mean he can recover if needed.

During the 2024-2025 Bundesliga season, Frimpong made more than 1,000 sprints, for example. As with Alexander-Arnold, he is considered by many to be a better attacker than a defender. That suited Xabi Alonso’s style at Leverkusen, given the fact that the former Liverpool midfielder played with three at the back and was happy for Frimpong to push up. For the Reds, it is likely that he will be used against sides that won’t be looking to attack us as much, as well as possibly replacing Mo Salah when the Egyptian goes off to the Africa Cup of Nations in the middle of December for a month.

He Gets the Club

It is clear from interviews and conversations that Frimpong has done since signing that he completely gets what it is to play for Liverpool. In one, he asks his dad how it is to see him wearing a Liverpool kit and says, “I’ve joined your club.”

When someone hurts you, as Alexander-Arnold has hurt many supporters, it is easy to go down the route of rewriting the past and pretending that the person of whom the Kop sang ‘the Scouser in our team’ doesn’t know what it means to be a player for the club. Obviously, that is nonsense, but it’s great to see how much it means to Frimpong to sign.

Then there is the fact that the player seems to be a genuinely nice guy. All of the reports out of Germany about him are that he will be sorely missed, both by the club that he played for and also by the people who worked with him on a regular basis. That thought was summed up by Thomas Hitzlesperger, who said that the player still has that sense ‘I am enjoying what I am doing here’. That ‘refreshing tone’ is something that Liverpool supporters are likely to take to straight away, especially for someone who cost around £30 million thanks to the fact that he had a release clause.
