Liverpool are advancing in talks with Eintracht Frankfurt over the signing of forward Hugo Ekitike.
Arne Slot’s side are in negotiations with the Bundesliga side over a deal to sign Ekitike, who is the club’s leading alternative to Newcastle forward Alexander Isak.
Despite communicating to Newcastle that the club would be prepared to spend a British record £120m on Isak, the stance from St James’ Park is that Isak is not for sale.
Ekitike is the top alternative and Liverpool are working to agree a deal. Newcastle had a bid rejected for Ekitike earlier this week, understood to be worth in the region €75m (£64m).
No new proposal has been submitted from the Magpies and Liverpool are prepared to submit an increased offer.
The 23-year-old scored 22 goals in all competitions for Frankfurt last season and added 12 assists. The German side are under no pressure to sell Ekitike after securing Champions League qualification.
Ekitike is keen on the move to the Premier League, where he could become Liverpool’s fourth major signing of the summer. A centre-forward is the priority for the Premier League champions, amid continued doubt surrounding the futures of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz.
Nunez is subject of interest from the Saudi Pro League, while Diaz has informed Liverpool of his desire to leave this summer. Bayern Munich and Barcelona are pursuing the Colombia international.
