In a bold step towards achieving his trophy-laden aspirations, Liam Delap has made the move to Chelsea, following his £30 million transfer from Ipswich. The England Under-21 striker, who has been handed the No.9 shirt at Stamford Bridge, joins a team that he believes can fulfil his ambition of winning major silverware.
Liam Delap, at just 22 years old, has already been making waves in English football, scoring 12 goals in the Premier League for Ipswich last season. Despite interest from various top-tier clubs, including Newcastle and Manchester United, it was Chelsea that captured his attention. The striker revealed that Chelsea’s ambition to return to the summit of European football was a key factor in his decision.
Growing up watching the Blues, Delap fully understands the club’s stature and the incredible success they have enjoyed in recent years. He shared his excitement about joining the club, stating, “I wanted to come here to win trophies. When I spoke to the club, everyone wanted to get back to the very top, and they have the quality and the players to do that.”
The desire to help Chelsea reclaim their place at the top of English and European football is a driving force behind Delap’s move. “The hunger and desire to keep adding trophies, to take the club back to where it belongs, that is the main objective,” he added.
Chelsea will not be the first club where Delap has crossed paths with manager Enzo Maresca. During his time at Manchester City, Delap worked with Maresca when the latter was overseeing the club’s Elite Development Squad. The pair were instrumental in City’s triumph in the 2020/21 Premier League 2 season, where Delap finished as the team’s top scorer with an impressive 24 goals in 20 matches. This partnership has proven fruitful, and Delap is excited to link up with Maresca once again at Chelsea.

“He is an incredible coach and helped us all develop so much,” Delap remarked. “What we did that season was record-breaking, and what he’s gone on to achieve – and what the players in that age group have achieved – is incredible.”
Delap’s transition to Stamford Bridge is made easier by the presence of several familiar faces. He will be reunited with former Manchester City teammates Cole Palmer and Romeo Lavia. Delap spoke fondly of his time with Palmer and Lavia at City, where they formed a formidable attacking trio.
“Cole is incredible in everything he does,” Delap said, expressing his excitement at the prospect of once again playing alongside the talented winger. “I spent a lot of time with them both at City. We grew up and played some incredible football together.”
Additionally, Delap will also be familiar with Levi Colwill, whom he faced off against many times during their youth career. Having spoken to his new teammates, Delap is eager to start his journey at Chelsea. “I’m really excited to come and play alongside them,” he concluded.
Liam Delap’s decision to join Chelsea marks the beginning of a promising chapter in his career. With the club’s ambitious plans to return to the top, coupled with Delap’s drive for success, this could be the perfect environment for him to fulfil his potential and help Chelsea reclaim their place among Europe’s elite.
