Mikel Arteta has called upon his Arsenal squad to “make our own history” when they take to the Parc des Princes on Wednesday evening in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Ousmane Dembélé’s early strike in North London handed les Parisiens a valuable 0-1 lead that they carry into Wednesday’s meeting in the French capital, and Arteta acknowledged that the result “gives us so much clarity about what we have to do.”

“We are more than capable, we’ve done it in Europe against a lot of odds – probably nobody would say that we’d be in this position, so that was against history as well. Let’s make our own history,” he expressed in Tuesday’s pre-match conference at the Parc des Princes.

The 43-year-old insisted that “we are a win away from being in the Champions League [final], in one of the most beautiful cities in the world and against a great opponent – it doesn’t get much better than that.”

“We’re here to make history, and we have a big opportunity tomorrow. We bring a result that gives us so much clarity about what we have to do.”

The Arsenal boss noted that he has done “a lot of learning from the first leg,” and made reference to “how small the margins are between the two teams. The result, in my opinion, should have been very different to that one so tomorrow [we have] another opportunity to prove that and earn the right to be in the final.”

Arteta’s message to his players was clear: “Let’s not do the talking [now], let’s do it tomorrow on that pitch at [20:00 BST, 21:00 CEST] when the game starts. Show our best, best, best, best version – and win the game.”

Arsenal must overturn a one-goal deficit in Paris if they are to qualify for the UEFA Champions League final.
