Leicester City will need to get creative this transfer window after £29m transfer windfall setback - Chido Obi Martin could be their man

Leicester City should target Manchester United youngster Chido Obi Martin this summer amid concerns transfer windfalls for Mads Hermansen and Wilfred Ndidi won’t be spent on the first-team squad.

It was exclusively revealed by FLW that the Foxes are still struggling with profit and sustainability (PSR) concerns and thus won’t have funds to spend on the team despite major player sales.

Hermansen was sold to West Ham in a deal worth a reported £20 million, while Ndidi’s £9 million release clause was triggered, which led to his move to Besiktas.

Leicester currently have a lack of firepower in attack and supporters would’ve hoped this £29 million windfall could have been used to add some competition to lead the line.

But Patson Daka remains the only recognised number nine in Martí Cifuentes’ side, which is why Obi Martin is a player Leicester should cast their eyes on.

Chido Obi Martin’s potential

It was reported by the Daily Mail that Man United are not currently planning on loaning out Obi Martin this summer.

The 17-year-old joined the Red Devils from Arsenal at the start of this year after a protracted negotiation process, and there is a lot of excitement surrounding his potential.

The striker has already earned minutes under Ruben Amorim, playing seven times in the Premier League, including a start against Brentford in May, as well as an appearance in the FA Cup against Fulham.

It is clear that he is highly rated at Old Trafford, but the door has reportedly been left open for a loan for the right opportunity.

If Leicester can convince Man United that a move to the King Power is the chance he needs, then he could be a very smart addition to Cifuentes’ squad.

Jordan Ayew featured against Sheffield Wednesday last weekend, while Daka started the team’s EFL Cup clash against Huddersfield Town.

Some competition is needed in attack and Cifuentes has earned a reputation for helping younger talent develop.

Leicester are also aiming for promotion this year, and are likely to be one of the top sides in the division, offering Obi Martin a high standard he can play with on a more regular basis than his likely limited opportunities at Man United this season.

Leicester have to get creative to improve squad

If PSR issues are going to continue to hold Leicester back despite player sales, then the club has to get creative in the market to improve the team.

Loans could be a smart area to help the Foxes short-term while they sort out their wider financial issues.

It isn’t an ideal way to build a sustainable squad for the long-term, but it might be a necessary step to righting the ship behind the scenes.

Someone like Obi Martin could be worth taking a gamble on as the upside could be quite high, while the risk of a disappointing loan stint is all on Man United’s shoulders.

The Premier League club will be keeping a very keen eye on how he performs if he goes on loan, and there will be an expectation that he plays regularly.

But it could be the kind of smart move that helps Cifuentes’ team contend for the top spots in the Championship this year.
