Leeds United and Burnley have earned promotion to the Premier League after both clubs won on Easter Monday.

The Clarets ensured the two sides went up simultaneously with a 2-1 home win over third-placed Sheffield United, who will have to go through the play-offs if they are to join them.

Josh Brownhill’s opener was cancelled out by Republic of Ireland international Tom Cannon, but the midfielder put the hosts back in front just before the interval from the penalty spot.

Earlier in the day Leeds thrashed Stoke City 6-0 at Elland Road to remain at the top of the table. Joel Piroe scored four first-half goals, with Junior Firpo and William Gnoto also chipping in.

Leeds United and Burnley secure Premier League promotion

The Whites are going back to the Premier League after two seasons in the Championship. They were denied promotion in last season’s play-off final at Wembley by Southampton, who were relegated from the top flight this past weekend.

Burnley make an instant return to the first tier of English football following last year’s relegation under Vincent Kompany. Remarkably, they have managed to go up without conceding more than two goals in a single game across the entire campaign. It’s the third promotion of Scott Parker’s managerial career having previously taken up Fulham and Bournemouth.

There is still the matter of the Championship title to be decided. Leeds and Burnley are both tied on 94 points, although Daniel Farke’s team sit atop the standings with a far superior goal difference.

The final promotion spot will be decided by the play-offs, for which Sheffield United and Sunderland have already qualified. Bristol City can seal their place in the four-team mini tournament with one more win, while Coventry City, Middlesbrough, Millwall and Blackburn Rovers are also vying for the top six.
