On Sunday, Lazio and Roma will be embroiled in a tense contest that could be worth an entire campaign. In the meantime, Calcio e Finanza takes the opportunity to compare the two clubs from an economic perspective based on the figures collected over the last five years.

Squad Cost

First of all, we begin with the cost of the squad. In 2020, Lazio had spent circa €102 million to assemble the squad that was at Simone Inzaghi’s disposal at the time, while Roma had paid €236 million. The figures soared on both sides of the Italian capital the following year, reaching €161m and €375m in 2021.

In 2024, Lazio’s squad cost has been estimated at €154 million, whereas Roma’s is at €366 million. So both clubs have witnessed a circa 50% rise over the past five years on this front.

Revenues

As for revenues, Lazio earned €104 million back in 2020, while their rivals had collected €190 million that same year. The figures also witnessed a sensational rise in 2021, to reach €165m for the Biancocelesti and €226m in the Giallorossi’s case. In 2024, Lazio registered €195 million in revenues, while Roma maintained their commanding lead by recording €301 million.

Profit/Loss

But while Roma enjoy higher revenues, they have been registering staggering financial losses in the post-COVID era, with their expenses dwarfing their incomes. The Gialorossi’s losses exceeded €200 million in 2021 and 2022.

On the other hand, Lazio possess a much healthier balance sheet, as their losses never surpassed the €30-million threshold, even in the post-COVID era. The Aquile even recorded a profit of €38 million in 2024, mainly thanks to their Champions League participation.

Lazio vs Roma – League standings

It should also be noted that Lazio have been ahead of Roma in the league standings over the past five seasons, with the only exception being last season, with the Giallorossi finishing 6th, ahead of the Biancocelesti in 7th place.
