Chelsea have been in a strong position all summer in their chase of Xavi Simons – but that may be about to change.

As far as we could see it, the Blues pursuit of the RB Leipzig winger went something like this: Chelsea established with the player that they want to sign him. He made it clear to his club that he wanted to go, with Chelsea his priority. As tends to be the case these days, the player and his suitors agreed personal terms in advance of the clubs agreeing.

Chelsea then put in quite a lot of work with Leipzig, working out what it would take to sign him. Then things went cold. This wasn’t because the Bundesliga team were asking too much or a deal couldn’t happen for some other reason – instead it seemed like Chelsea roughly had the terms worked out with the player as well as his club.

It was a case of the Blues selling some of their options in those positions before they bought him. It seems that Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson are the two that they want to be sure are heading out before they pull the trigger on Simons. All this time, there’s been a lack of competition, and they’ve felt they can return to the deal and pick up where they left off when they’re ready.

Tottenham look to take advantage of Chelsea’s hesitation

That may now prove more difficult – the Daily Telegraph are today reporting that Tottenham are getting into the mix, seeing Chelsea’s hesitation and looking to take advantage.

For his part, Simons would probably prefer a move to Chelsea – but if he feels the Blues may not make their necessary sales in time, it would be only natural for him to accept a move to Spurs if it’s a concrete option.
