West Ham are in talks to sign Kyle Walker-Peters after he pulled out of a planned medical at Besiktas.

The full-back is available as a free agent after his Southampton contract expired in June, and could bolster Graham Potter’s Hammers next season.

Negotiations with the Tottenham academy graduate remain in very early stages, and a deal is not considered close.

The 28-year-old had come close to joining Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Besiktas last week, having already agreed a deal in principle, but asked to postpone his medical tests.

This prompted the Turkish side to withdraw their interest, a move they confirmed in a statement released today.

It read: “It is publicly known that the arrival of professional football player Kyle Walker-Peters, with whom we previously announced an agreement in principle and invited him to Istanbul for a medical examination, has been postponed.

“Today, Kyle Walker-Peters notified us, requesting an extension. Consequently, our club has withdrawn its transfer. Our club continues its transfer efforts in accordance with its established policy. We respectfully inform the public.”

West Ham are in need of defensive reinforcements after Aaron Cresswell and Vladimir Coufal were released at the end of last season.

Should the move be completed, Walker-Peters would mark the third permanent arrival of the summer, following Senegalese midfielder El Hadji Malick Diouf and Jean-Clair Todibo, whose loan was made permanent.

Walker-Peters first joined Southampton from Tottenham on loan in 2020, making the switch permanent later that year.

He was relegated with the Saints after the 2022-23 season, but won promotion with them the following campaign after beating Leeds 1-0 at Wembley Stadium.

The Briton, twice capped for the Three Lions, opted to leave the club after they were relegated again last season. Walker-Peters appeared 33 times, charting two assists.

West Ham finished 14th in the Premier League last season, shipping 62 goals - the third-most of any non-relegated side.
