England midfielder Keira Walsh has full belief that England can hurt Spain and overcome the World Champions in the Euro 2025 final on Sunday.
The Lionesses qualified for the final in dramatic style, with a late goal from Michelle Agyemang taking the tie against Italy into extra time, where Chloe Kelly then scored the winner.
In a rematch of the 2023 World Cup final, in which La Roja came out victorious, Walsh insists the Lionesses are not dwelling on the past as they look to retain their European crown.
“The Spanish team are incredible and they’ve got some really good players,” Walsh said. “But I think we also know what we are capable of and where we can hurt them. So it’s going to be an interesting game.
“[The World Cup final] was obviously a massive disappointment and as a collective, we probably feel like we didn’t have our best performance that day.
“I think as a football player you can become too emotional and I think if you’re trying to pull on that too much then you’re going to have too many things going on.
“For us, it’s a new game, a new team and we know what we’ve been bringing to this tournament so we’re going to keep doing that and just focus on the positives. So we’re not trying to draw on that too much.
“Obviously you think about it a little bit but I think for us, we put it to the side and focus on the game on Sunday. We’ve got so many new players in this team who are really confident and bring so many new things to this team. It’s exciting and we can just focus on the positives.”
Walsh moved to Chelsea from Barcelona in January of this year, after spending three years at the European giants, winning two Champions League trophies alongside many players in the Spain team.
Despite the 28-year-old considering her former teammates close friends, Walsh insists she will be putting those friendships aside on Sunday in Basel.
“I speak to Jana Fernandez quite a lot, we are good friends and I’ve got a few friends from Barcelona,” Walsh added.
“She was just texting me saying about our last two games and that she’s happy for us that we’re in the final.
“Moving to a different country, sometimes it is difficult and you’re on your own which is why I’ve got so many good friends on the Spanish team, because they’ve always looked after me.
“Irene Paredes always invited me around for dinner with her family when I wasn’t feeling great and all those girls really spent time to take care of me and look after me.
“After the game, we’ll go back to being friends but right now, we’re rivals and I want to win.”
