Junior Firpo's contract with Leeds United is set to expire in 2025
Junior Firpo is ready to leave Leeds United in the summer if the club fails to gain promotion to the Premier League.
According to a report from Football Insider, the Dominican defender is weighing up his Elland Road future going into next summer.
The left-back has been a key figure under Daniel Farke, featuring in 14 of the team’s 17 opening fixtures this season, contributing one goal and three assists.
The 28-year-old has a contract with the Yorkshire outfit until the end of this season, meaning he will depart as a free agent in 2025 if a fresh agreement is not reached.
Firpo is reportedly considering his Leeds future as we approach the January transfer window, which is now just one month away.
It is understood that failure to gain promotion will see him seek a move away from the Yorkshire outfit.
His future remains a big uncertainty for Leeds, and could lead to activity in the new year in order to secure the side for the second half of the campaign.
Firpo will be available to discuss terms on a pre-contract with clubs abroad from January 1, which puts Leeds in an awkward position.
The Whites could also look to cash in on the defender in a bid to earn some fee for him, instead of risking his exit for nothing in the summer, although they are indeed hamstrung by the fact that Firpo can talk to overseas clubs for himself at the turn of the year.
It is believed that Farke is keen to strengthen left-back, meaning there could be January activity in that area, particularly if Firpo does depart.
This uncertainty surrounding the player’s future could be tricky to navigate in the new year given the team are also in the thick of a battle for automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Leeds will want to avoid losing anybody as a free agent given the potential cost of that.
However, cashing in on him in January would also leave the squad short at left-back and in need of a new signing in his place.
Given his high wages, it might be difficult to find a buyer, especially with how little time is left on his contract.
Any fee they could receive for him would be quite low, with those factors in mind, so they might be best off waiting until the summer and seeing where they stand in terms of league status.
