Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is the longest-serving player at the club among the current squad.

The 27-year-old Reds defender nearly left Anfield in the summer to join Newcastle United, but the deal didn’t materialise in the end.

The Liverpool defender had to wait for his chances at the club, with Ibrahima Konate ahead of him in the pecking order.

Gomez has now played three games in a row in all competitions, and he is getting better alongside Virgil van Dijk.

According to journalist Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail, the defender has spent time working on the ball-playing aspect of his game in recent months.

The former Charlton Athletic defender is a fantastic passer of the ball and has been working on creating three-versus-two situations all over the pitch.

Gomez, who is on £85k-per-week wages at Anfield, has never scored for Liverpool in his ten-year-long stay at the club.

However, he is benefitting from a redesigned set-piece practice by coach Aaron Briggs. He is now getting more into the penalty box for corners and free-kicks and hopes to get a goal to his name at some point.

What does the future hold for Joe Gomez

During the summer transfer window, Gomez was open to a move, but he didn’t force the club to sell him.

The Reds also didn’t push him out, but they would not have stood in his way if there was a club willing to meet their asking price.

Until Konate is back, Gomez is likely to play alongside Van Dijk.

If Liverpool manage to secure a contract extension for Van Dijk, it makes sense for the club to keep Gomez and look to bolster other areas of the pitch.

Both Gomez and Jarrell Quansah would be more than happy to be a part of such a strong side as long as they are getting a decent number of games.

At the same time, anything can happen in the transfer window. He could still leave the club if Liverpool receive a very good offer for him.
