During a breathtaking clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Liverpool’s recent 6-3 triumph over Tottenham highlighted not just the offensive prowess of the team but also the subtler contributions of Dominik Szoboszlai. While the spotlight often swivels to the goal scorers, it’s essential to appreciate the engines of midfield—players like Szoboszlai who orchestrate play and embody the manager Arne Slot’s tactical vision.
David Lynch, speaking to Dave Davis on Anfield Index’s latest podcast, encapsulated the essence of Szoboszlai’s performance. Despite not being the main man on the score sheet, Szoboszlai’s versatility and work rate make him a cornerstone in the Liverpool setup. Lynch pointed out, “He’s underrated for everything that he brings to the team. He might not score loads, but he is still so, so important to this team.”
The comparison with Roberto Firmino is telling. Much like the Brazilian, Szoboszlai blends various elements of his game—pressing, creating, and linking play—that are crucial yet not always headline-grabbing. “He reminds me of Firmino with the way he combines different elements of his play so well,” Lynch added, highlighting the strategic role Szoboszlai plays in both the defensive and offensive phases of the game.
What stood out in the Tottenham clash was Szoboszlai’s relentless energy and commitment to the team’s cause. Even under criticism, he continued to perform at a level that, according to Lynch, contributed significantly to the side. “I loved every aspect of his performance at Spurs and he has had some criticism recently, but I still thought he was contributing significantly to the side,” Lynch noted.
While goals and assists are the most glaring metrics in football, Szoboszlai’s contributions in covering the ground and knitting the play together are what make him phenomenal, even if these efforts don’t always show up in the stats. “We do want to see him get the goals and assists, but as long as he keeps doing what he does in covering the ground and knitting the play, he’s phenomenal,” said Lynch.

It’s clear that under Arne Slot’s guidance, Szoboszlai is flourishing. In only his second season in the Premier League, the young midfielder is showing signs of becoming one of the elite players in his role. “He’s still a young player and this is only his second season in the Premier League, but we’re starting to see the best of him and Slot is getting the best out of him,” Lynch remarked.
The evolution of Szoboszlai under Slot’s regime is a testament to the nurturing environment at Liverpool, which continues to develop young talents into world-class assets.
Szoboszlai’s performance against Tottenham was a masterclass in midfield versatility. As Liverpool continues to adapt and evolve under Slot, the Hungarian’s role will be pivotal in their quest for domestic and European success. His ability to integrate defensive diligence with creative flair makes him an indispensable part of the team’s tactical setup.
As Liverpool fans and analysts alike have noted, while Szoboszlai’s contributions may not always dominate the highlight reels, his influence on the pitch is undeniable and essential for Liverpool’s ambitions this season.
In a sport where the contributions of defensive midfielders and tactical playmakers are often overshadowed by the glitz of goal scorers, Szoboszlai’s role deserves recognition and appreciation. As the season progresses, it will be intriguing to see how his talents further develop and impact Liverpool’s campaign under the astute management of Arne Slot.
