The January transfer window often brings excitement and speculation, but for Liverpool, this season’s approach appears to be one of stability rather than significant business. On the latest Media Matters podcast from Anfield Index, journalist Lewis Steele shared his perspective on Liverpool’s plans for the mid-season window, emphasising a likely quiet period for incomings but pointing out the need for midfield reinforcements.

Steele was clear in his assessment that Liverpool are not expected to make any major signings in January, citing the club’s focus on maintaining squad harmony and stability. He said:
“I don’t expect Liverpool to do much business, maybe a couple of loan exits for players who aren’t close to the first team.”
The likes of fringe players in the squad could be shipped out temporarily, allowing them to gain valuable playing time elsewhere. However, Liverpool’s core squad appears set to remain intact.
While Steele doesn’t anticipate a flurry of activity, he did acknowledge an area where Liverpool could strengthen: the midfield. Highlighting the demanding nature of Arne Slot’s system, Steele suggested an additional midfielder would bolster Liverpool’s depth as they pursue success on multiple fronts:
“Liverpool could do with another midfielder. The intensity and style under Slot mean that extra depth in midfield would really help.”
Although Liverpool’s midfield has performed admirably this season, the sheer number of fixtures and the physical demands of the Premier League make additional cover a practical consideration.
Steele also pointed out that Liverpool’s cautious approach in January reflects their broader strategy of balancing resources. The club has historically avoided panic buys, preferring to wait for the right player rather than making a short-term fix.
“Liverpool don’t tend to make knee-jerk decisions in January. If they bring someone in, it’ll be someone who fits their long-term plans.”
This strategic patience has served Liverpool well in the past, with the club prioritising quality over quantity in their transfer dealings.
As the January window approaches, Liverpool fans may not see the blockbuster moves that other clubs might make, but Steele’s insights suggest a calculated and deliberate approach from the Reds. While a midfield addition could strengthen the squad, the emphasis will likely remain on continuity and maximising the resources already available.
Liverpool’s measured approach underlines their confidence in the current squad and their commitment to long-term success. While fans may hope for reinforcements, the trust in Arne Slot and the existing group to deliver remains unwavering.
