It would understandably be a tough sell for many Wolverhampton Wanderers fans. As a Leicester player, Jamie Vardy made something of a lasting impression that remains firmly implanted in their memory. Concerns about potentially signing the striker go beyond that, however.
Even so, a broken clock can be right twice a day, and there are multiple outlets reporting on Vardy's addition to Wolves this summer. Far from anything in stone, Wednesday's Sky Sports broadcast shared a report from The Sun that claimed that Vitor Pereira's side is currently in pole position to sign the Foxes icon on a free transfer.
Certainly, a lot of elements can be at play here. Agents often try to get their clients' names in the news cycle to stir up further interest and enhance their negotiating position. Sometimes a reported link can simply be the work of the player's camp to put pressure on a party they are actually doing business with. Then again, rumors can also just originate on an otherwise slow day in the press.
Even so, the fit, purely in terms of the on-the-pitch aspect, would work. Particularly with Vardy making it known that he wants to play for a Premier League side, he'll know that his options are inherently limited. If he wanted to announce an arrival for a different interested Championship squad, it would likely be the work of five minutes to reach an agreement.
His wanting to leave City, however, ultimately stems from wanting to continue to play in the top division in England. If it turns out that the EPL isn't an option any longer, then the next logical move would be to one of the highest flights in another league in Europe.
The timing and decision to no longer be a member of the Foxes make it incredibly unlikely that anything other than the EPL or abroad is at play here. Knowing this, it's reasonable to assume that he will be willing to come off the bench and take a lesser role as needed.
If playing time was a concern, again, he'd do just as well staying with LCFC. This, along with a recognition of his being removed from his peak abilities, is likely to translate to Vardy being accepting of potentially no longer being a starter.
This is where Wolves come back into play. Jørgen Strand Larsen will need to stay up top. Between the Norwegian taking a lot of attention and players like Rayan Aït-Nouri providing service, Vardy could see opportunities open up for himself, at least compared to what he is experiencing at City. He would need to shift to a slightly deeper role if he were to remain in the starting XI or be willing to replace Larsen as needed.
If the move away from his current East Midlands side is simply about competing in the Prem and wanting to win games, Wolves could be a good fit that is a realistic option. With something like that going through, the opening press conference would likely need to begin with some form of apology for prior howling behavior. It would be something of a mutually beneficial move all the same for the soon-to-be former Leicester player.
