Liverpool’s promising start under Arne Slot has reignited optimism among fans, with the squad demonstrating both grit and attacking flair. However, while performances have impressed, questions remain about the depth and balance of the team—especially in defence.
Despite maintaining a decent defensive record, recent matches have revealed vulnerabilities, particularly in squad depth. The summer transfer window saw minimal activity from Liverpool, leaving fans concerned as injuries began to take their toll. With a demanding schedule of European and domestic fixtures, the January transfer window now looms as a critical opportunity to address these gaps.
One name that dominated fan discussions during the summer was Martin Zubimendi. The Basque midfielder seemed a perfect fit, but hopes were dashed as he opted to remain at his boyhood club. This setback emphasised the urgency for reinforcements in key positions.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has been vocal about where the club should focus their efforts. Speaking on The Lowdown, the former Reds defender said, “Left back is definitely an area that Liverpool should be looking to strengthen in January.”

Carragher’s comments reflect the toll taken on Andy Robertson, who has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s success. “Andy Robertson needs help; he’s a Liverpool legend, he’s won the lot,” Carragher said. “But certainly, the amount of games he’s played, playing in a Jurgen Klopp team, you know, constantly running up and down that wing for five or six years. He needs a little bit of help in that position.”
The club’s interest in Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez could provide the solution. Carragher hinted at the inside knowledge Liverpool might leverage: “Obviously, Richard Hughes must know that player (Milos Kerkez) really well and really likes him. I’m sure he’ll know his contract situation seeing as he probably did the contract for him.”

With the team aiming for another successful season, bolstering the squad in January appears essential. The addition of fresh talent, particularly at left-back, could prove pivotal as Liverpool navigate a gruelling campaign. For now, all eyes remain on the upcoming transfer window and whether Liverpool will heed Carragher’s advice.
