FLW takes a look at some of the signings that Sheffield United should make this summer

Highlights

  • Relegated Sheffield United must fill gaps left by departing players like Oli Norwood, Chris Basham, and others this summer.
  • Marek Rodak, Dimitrios Giannoulis, and Jamal Lowe are potential shrewd signings to bolster the squad for the upcoming Championship season.
  • Sheffield United are in need of key positions like goalkeeper, left-back, and attacker, making these suggested signings crucial for the team.

It's a summer of change at Bramall Lane, and Chris Wilder faces the unenviable task of re-shaping his squad following the loss of a number of experienced players.

Sheffield United were relegated from the Premier League after a dismal season which saw them finish bottom of the league on 16 points, winning just three times, and becoming the third-worst Premier League side of all time.

It's clear that Wilder needed to make some changes this summer, and it's been announced that the likes of Oli Norwood, Chris Basham, George Baldock, Max Lowe and Wes Foderingham will all leave the club following the expiration of their contracts.

However, these players will need to be replaced this summer, and it's set to be a busy couple of months for Wilder as he looks to do so.

Marek Rodak

With Wes Foderingham and Jordan Amissah leaving upon the expiration of their contracts, coupled with uncertainty over Adam Davies' future at the club with his deal set to expire, Sheffield United only have one senior goalkeeper on their books for next season.

Ivo Grbic is currently Sheffield United's only senior goalkeeper, and it's clear that they will need reinforcements between the sticks this summer.

Former Fulham man Marek Rodak is set to become a free agent this summer, and he could be a perfect signing for the Blades, with a wealth of Championship experience, and the battle to become first choice between him and Grbic would help drive competition and standards.

As a free agent, Sheffield United wouldn't have to pay a fee, which is ideal, and signing Rodak would certainly be a shrewd signing, with the Slovakian international having two Championship promotions on his CV, and 111 games in the division under his belt.

Dimitrios Giannoulis

Former Norwich City left-back Dimitrios Giannoulis is a free agent this summer after spending three years at Carrow Road, and it's clear to see that the Blades need a left-back this summer.

Yasser Larouci's loan spell with the club has come to an end, and he has returned to France, while Max Lowe was one of the players that was released earlier this summer, and he went on to join Sheffield Wednesday.

This means that Rhys Norrington-Davies is the only recognised senior left-back, and his future is in the air with the club having activated the one-year extension on his deal, but it doesn't give them much long-term clarity.

Giannoulis is a quality operator at Championship level, and would be a coup for the Blades on a free transfer, although it remains to be seen if his wages would be affordable, given the club's financial situation.

Jamal Lowe

Jamal Lowe has become a free agent this summer following his release by Bournemouth, and he could offer something different to the Blades' attack.

Ben Brereton Diaz has returned to Villarreal following his loan spell, while Oli McBurnie's future at the club is uncertain, and Daniel Jebbison looks set to leave, so reinforcements are needed in attack.

Lowe has proven himself to be a quality option in the Championship, and has a promotion on his CV after helping Bournemouth reach the top-flight in 2022.

At 29, there is still plenty of life left in him yet, and he showed at Swansea last season that he is a quality player after a run of games.

In total, he scored nine league goals for Swansea in 35 games, a decent return, and he showed signs that he was getting back to his best towards the end of the season.

Given his experience in the division and status as a free agent, he'd be worth a punt by Sheffield United this summer.
