Jake O’Brien has joined Everton from Lyon for an initial fee of around £17 million.

The 23-year-old has credited Republic Of Ireland captain Seamus Coleman as a key reason for opting to join the Toffees.

The young centre-back joined Lyon last summer from Crystal Palace and the move worked wonders for his career.

He made 32 appearances across all competitions last term, bagging five goals and two assists.

His displays attracted attention from several top clubs but O’Brien opted to join Everton.

He said (per the Guardian): “Seamus has been on to me to sign for Everton. He’s a top guy – a brilliant captain. To play under him here and with Ireland will be a privilege.

“He’s the best captain I’ve ever played under. He’s massively respected – not just here but in the football world in general.”

O’Brien’s arrival has sparked fears Everton could now sanction Jarrad Branthwaite’s departure.

Manchester United had a £50m bid rejected but they could return with another offer before the 2024 transfer window closes on August 30.

However, the Toffees are adamant they don’t see the 23-year-old as a replacement for the United target.

James Tarkowski and Branthwaite are likely to continue as Sean Dyche’s first-choice central defenders this season.
